PopuliVerse Monitor
The Monitor is a monthly digest of what populist actors did around the world. It is for readers who do not follow the news every day and still want a reliable picture. It describes what happened. It does not analyse or judge. Every item links to its sources. Populism is the object of study, never the target.
Issues
The first issue, 2026/1, covers September 2026.
What is in an issue
- The month in brief. A short general picture of the month.
- Around the world. Six regions: Europe; North America; Latin America; Asia-Pacific; Middle East and North Africa; Sub-Saharan Africa. Each region has about four full items and a few one-line entries. A full item says what happened, gives the background and says what comes next.
- New research. A short account of the works on populism published that month that are in the Library. The full list is one click away.
An issue has 15 pages at most. You can understand each event from the issue itself. The links are there as proof.
How it is made
The Monitor follows written rules. They were set before the first issue.
- Who is covered. Actors that academic datasets classify as populist.
- What counts as news. What these actors did, not what they said: elections, governments, laws, court rulings.
- Where the news comes from. A fixed list of sources: nine news agencies, one specialist outlet for the European Union, regional sources and official records.
- How it is written. From the reports only, in plain words, without judgement.
- Who does what. An AI assistant searches and drafts. The editor chooses the items, edits every word and checks every link.
Web page and PDF
Every issue is published twice from the same text: as a web page and as a typeset PDF. The PDF is the version of record. The web page shows the PDF’s page numbers in the margin, so a passage can be cited by page from either one. Each issue has its own DOI.
How to cite
Each issue gives its reference in a “How to cite” box, for example:
Rzazade, Khayyam, ed. 2026. PopuliVerse Monitor 2026/1 (September 2026). DOI.
To cite one item, add its title and the page of the PDF on which it stands.
Issues are numbered by year, and the number follows the month the issue covers: 2026/1 is September 2026, 2026/2 is October 2026, and so on. Each year starts again at 1: January 2027 is 2027/1. The Monitor is published under a CC BY 4.0 licence.
